One Day in Funchal: Cable Car, Old Town & Market
A practical one-day route through Funchal — the cable car up to Monte, the wicker toboggan back down, the Old Town's painted doors, and the market — for anyone with a single day to see the city.
Funchal rewards a full day more than a rushed half-day — it's compact enough to cover on foot and by cable car without a rental car, but spread across enough distinct areas (harbourfront, Old Town, market, and the hillside above the city) that trying to do it in two or three hours means skipping most of it.
The classic route starts with the cable car (Teleférico) up from the waterfront to Monte, for the views back down over the city and the bay, then the traditional wicker toboggan (carro de cesto) ride back down through Monte's streets — one of Madeira's best-known experiences and usually the first thing visitors ask about. Back in the city, the Mercado dos Lavradores market is worth an hour on its own for the fruit, flower and fish stalls, and it sits right at the edge of Zona Velha, Funchal's old town.

Round the day off along the waterfront promenade toward the marina, where Funchal's cable-liner harbour and restaurant strip make for an easy evening.
