Climbing Pico Ruivo the Easy Way: Achada do Teixeira Route

The short, well-maintained route to Madeira's highest peak — under two hours round trip, without the exposed ridge walking of the full PR1 traverse.

Standing on Madeira's highest point doesn't have to mean the full ridge-walk exposure of PR1 from Pico do Areeiro — there's a much shorter, gentler way up, and most visitors don't realise it exists until they've already talked themselves out of the longer route.

PR1.2 starts at Achada do Teixeira and covers 2.8km each way to the 1,862m summit of Pico Ruivo — about 260m of climbing spread over roughly 1.5 hours round trip. The path is well maintained and paved in places, genuinely closer to easy-moderate than to anything technical.

It's a completely separate booking from the full PR1 traverse, and considerably cheaper — this is one of the standard-rate trails rather than the premium-priced PR1 route, which matters if budget or time is tight but the summit itself is the goal. There's a small mountain refuge near the top where some hikers stop for sunrise, having started in the dark.

If seeing Madeira's highest point is on your list but the full Areeiro-to-Ruivo traverse feels like more than you want to take on, this is the version that gets you there — book your slot through SIMplifica in advance either way, and check conditions the day before, since the summit sits well above the cloud line and weather changes fast up there.
