Porco Fish in Madeira: The Reef Fish With a Human Grin

Ask around Funchal's marina about "porco fish" and you'll get pointed toward one very specific, very strange-looking animal: the grey triggerfish (Balistes capriscus), known in Portuguese as peixe-porco — literally "pig fish." The nickname comes from two things at once: the grunting, almost oinking sound it makes when it's pulled out of the water, and a set of flat, white, disturbingly human-looking front teeth, built for crushing sea urchins, crabs and shellfish off the reef. It's one of those fish photos that goes viral every so often for exactly that reason — it genuinely looks like it's smiling back at you.
