Where to Stay in Funchal: Old Town vs São Martinho
Funchal's old town or the quieter south-coast area of São Martinho? What each is like, who it suits, and which of our apartments sit where.
Funchal is compact, but where you sleep still changes the feel of a trip. The two areas most visitors compare are the historic centre around Sé and Zona Velha, and São Martinho, a residential stretch of the south coast just west of the centre.
The old town is for people who want to step outside into the city: the cathedral, the market, the painted doors of Rua de Santa Maria, restaurants and the harbour promenade are all within a short walk, and you don't need a car. It is lively in the evening, which suits couples and friends more than light sleepers. Carreira Dreamscape sits here, with balconies over one of the city's oldest squares.
São Martinho is calmer and greener. It is a short walk (about 15 minutes) to Praia Formosa and close to the Lido and Madeira Forum, with easier parking and more space — a good fit for families and longer stays. Atlantic Studio (up to 2 guests), Atlantic Dream and Levada Dreamscape are here.
Both areas are on the south coast, so the mild winter weather and the airport transfer are similar. Choose the old town for walking and atmosphere, São Martinho for space and quiet, and check live prices on each property page — booking direct skips platform fees.
